Maria Tam Wai Chu

Miss Maria Tam is a barrister. She is a member of the Basic Law Committee of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (7/1997-6/2002) and a Deputy to the National Peoples' Congress of the PRC (3/1998-2/2003). She is also a board member of the Hong Kong Airport Authority since April 1999.

Mrs Tam was educated in Hong Kong and London. She was admitted to the UK Bar in 1972 and to the HK Bar in 1973. She was a District Board member (1980-1986), an Urban Councillor (1979-1987) and a Legislative Council member (1981-1991). She served as an Executive Councillor from 1983 to 1991. She severed all ties with the British administration in 1992. In 1992, she was appointed by the Central Government a Hong Kong Adviser. In 1993 she was a member of the Preliminary Working Committee for the Preparatory Committee for HKSAR set up in response to the unilateral action of Governor Patten to change the electoral process in Hong Kong. She became a member of the Preparatory Committee in 1996 and the Provisional Legislative Council (12/1996-6/1997).
