Shankar Acharya Born in October 1945, Shankar Acharya graduated from Oxford University in 1967. In 1971, he got his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. He joined the World Bank, where he was Research Adviser (1979), then Director of the World Development Report. In 1985, he joined the Ministry of Finance of India as Economic Adviser in the Department of Economic Affairs. In 1990, he was appointed Senior Adviser and Additional Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs. In 1990, he was back at the World Bank as Chief, Public Economic Division, until 1993. In 1993, he was appointed Chief Economic Adviser of the Ministry of Finance of India, in rank of Secretary to Government of India. Dr. Shankar Acharya is a board member or Director of the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the Exim Bank of India, the Institute of Economic Growth, the National Council of Applied & Economic Research, the Indian Economic Association and the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER). see article Winter 2001 | |||
